Romanian born Mircea Eliade studied many languages, including Sanskrit, and founded and headed the History of Religions department of the University of Chicago. The author of numerous books, including The Sacred and the Profane and The Forge and the Crucible, he is arguably the greatest historian of religions who ever lived.
